The meaning of:

Surat Yunus, Verse 18:

And the meaning of Surat az-Zumar, Verse 3:

These Verses are about the idol worshippers and the wahhabis take them to refer to the believers.

Abdullaah ibn ^Umar said about the Khawaarij what means: “They went to verses which were revealed about the ones who associate partners with Allaah and they took them to refer to the believers.”

Surat Yunus, Verse 18 means: <Those who associate partners with Allaah worship what doesn’t harm them and doesn’t benefit them and say that these statues are intercessors for us to God.>

Surat az-Zumar, Verse 3 means: <Those who associate partners with Allaah say “We do not worship the idols except so they can make us closer to God.”>

DEFINITIONS

1) Imaam al-Junayd said: <<TawHeed is differentiating the Eternal (Allaah) from the created. >>

2) As defined by Imaam Taqiyyud-Deen as-Subkiyy (d. 756 AH), who was a well-known scholar of Fiqh, the fundamentals of the Religion, the interpretation of the Qur’aan, the Arabic language, and other sciences of Religion, “worship” is:

(ghaayatul khuDoo3i wal khushoo3)

which means the ultimate submission and humbleness (to someone else).

Ar-Raaghib al-ASbahaaniyy, the famous linguist, established the same definition for “worship” in his book, Mufradaatul-Qur’aan.

So, worship is not simply ‘to call upon one’, ‘to fear one’, or ‘to be hopeful of one’.

Rather, calling upon, fearing of, or being hopeful of something entails worship only when linked to and associated with the ultimate submitting and humbling of oneself to that thing.

The one who worships other than Allaah commits shirk (associating partners with Allaah).
